Are Your Veneers Turning Yellow or Brown?

Have you had veneers for a long time and now you are noticing that your veneers are turning yellow or brown? Well, it is normal that if you have had veneers placed a long time ago (15-20 years ago), there’s a small chance that you might notice some signs of wear and tear. If so, there’s no need to fret—our Houston cosmetic dentists can help you!

Signs of veneer wear and tear

When veneers undergo wear and tear, this means that they become dull in color, or that your underlying tooth (your natural tooth that your veneer is placed on) can become darkened or discolored over time (meaning that your veneers might turn yellow or brown).

Furthermore, wear and tear can also mean that the tooth, and/or the bonding cement around the edges of your veneer, can become darkened. This discoloration, in turn, detracts from the natural beauty of your veneers. This can happen for several reasons, including:

  • Tobacco use

  • Consuming dark-colored beverages (red wine, colas, etc)

Can I whiten my veneers?

If you experience any of these signs, you could become quite bothered by it. The discoloration might lead you to wonder if you can whiten you veneers so that you no longer have to look at your yellow-stained veneers. Dr. Frazar and Dr. Hedge don’t recommend whitening your veneers, but, instead, they recommend redoing or replacing your veneers.

There are actually a couple of reasons why you should not whiten your veneers, such as:

  • It is important to know that using whitening products on your veneers can actually damage your veneers. This can actually produce more unattractive veneers than before whitening! Furthermore, whitening your porcelain veneers might have adverse effects, and cause the opposite result, such as a more dull appearance compared to how your veneers looked before whitening.

  • We know that using at-home teeth whitening products for your veneers is simply not effective. Since your porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, when you try to whiten them using a whitening gel or similar product, your veneers won’t show much positive aesthetic change (that is, if any positive change is noticed at all). Simply put, whitening an already stain-resistant item won’t produce positive results.
