Sedation Dentistry Helps Those with Dental Anxiety

As many as 75% of U.S. adults suffer from some form of dental fear. This fear can cause a person to avoid the dentist. By the time a dental emergency forces the person to seek care, the problem requires invasive and often painful techniques, which simply reinforces the fear.

Are you going to your dentist at least twice a year for checkups? Many people ignore their oral health because of fear or anxiety about sitting in the dentist’s chair. Dental fears can jeopardizes dental health and could jeopardize health in other ways, too. Oral health is increasingly being linked to overall health and longevity. If this sounds like you, it’s time to visit our Houston sedation dentistry office.

The fear of going to the dentist is typically deeply ingrained and stemming from a bad childhood experience. People who have bad memories of going to the dentist – from the scary noise of the drill to the pain of the procedures – often have a hard time making themselves go.

However, when they avoid going to the dentist, they put their oral health at serious risk – and when they finally do go, any problems they have may have already escalated into more serious (and painful) conditions. There is help that can make the process easier and help you avoid costly and unnecessary procedures in the future.

Fortunately, there is a way to break this vicious cycle: sedation dentistry.

About Sedation Dentistry

  • Sedation dentistry refers to the use of sedatives to relax patients during exams or dental work. This is not the same thing as sleep dentistry, during which the patient is completely asleep during the procedure. Sedation dentistry involves the patient being awake, but in a deep state of relaxation.
  • Sedation dentistry is ideal for people who experience high anxiety about going to the dentist or sounds related to dental work being done. Many people report that their procedure seemed to take a few minutes, even if it took hours.
  • Sedation dentistry helps ensure that people who are afraid of the dentist get the dental care they need. It can be used for proactive dental work as well as emergency procedures.
  • Our Houston sedation dentistry expertise makes the visit easier on you and enables your dentist to focus solely on the procedure, knowing you are comfortable and relaxed.

Don’t allow fear of going to the dentist keep you from getting the dental care that is so important to your health. Dr. Frazar and Dr. Hedge are sedation dentists in Houston who want to put you at ease and ensure your dental health is in great shape. We encourage you to come in for a consultation to discuss your fears and concerns.

Sedation Options

Sedation dentistry takes the anxiety out of dental procedures, making it easier to get dental care. We offer three sedation options, depending on the patient’s level of anxiety and medical history:

  • Oral sedation involves an anti-anxiety medication taken orally about an hour prior to your procedure.
  • Intravenous, or IV sedation, allows a much greater degree of control over the level of sedation, so we can tailor it in real-time to your needs.
  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is often used to enhance either of the above techniques.

The goal with each of these sedation techniques is to help you achieve a state of deep relaxation, while maintaining consciousness. For some patients, knowing that they will be awake and able to respond to questions further eases their anxiety.

Safety Precautions

Your safety is our number one concern. That’s why we take the following precautions:

  • We typically ask you not to eat or drink anything for 8 hours before your procedure, except prescription medications.
  • As long as you are under sedation, we monitor your blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate.
  • We ask you to rest in our office for 15 to 20 minutes after your procedure.
  • We require that you have a responsible adult drive you to and from your appointment.
